Review: The Servants

The ServantsThe Servants by Michael Marshall Smith

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was a fast read and on the whole enjoyable. I did, however, find the ending somewhat unsatisfactory. Throughout the book the relationship between Mark and the Old Woman downstairs is gradually developed, but the seems to be no explanation of her and after the climactic end scenes, she suddenly seems to be forgotten, with no explanation as to who she is or what happens to their relationship after that. I found the metaphor of the servant’s life downstairs a good one, and would have liked to have seen this developed further. That said, I read it over a couple of days and found it an engaging read, drawn in by the mysterious downstairs.
